Pointed

It's an arch over a door, and for me a special one. Once upon a time that seems distant but isn't, this arch was part of the wallpaper of my life, just another bright spot in the scenery that I passed as I walked my kids to and from school. Pretty, isn't it? And it's pointy, a gothic arch. Read all about it.

  1. It does have a lot of past glory.

Wow, so your kids went to school in the neighborhood?

  2. Yes, my kids have gone to schools all over the city. There are lots of good ones to choose from.

  3. That photo should be framed and hung on someone's wall! A work of art!

  4. Ha ... an ogive is a pointed arch. I like that word ogival.

On the LHS of the door there are two little blue numbers 111/112. Does that indicate this is a private residence? Also, please reassure me that all those "twigs" hanging down are not electrical cabling!

  5. Here, house/street numbers appear first (on top) in Arabic, and then in western numerals below. If you look close, you'll see that the final numeral in the top row isn't like the first two. It looks something like a mirror image of our "7", and that's the arabic "2". "1" is pretty much the same for both systems.

  6. Oh, and I think the thing hanging down are a dormant vine. It's funny, so much stays green year-round in Lebanon that the few species that experience a dormant phase look quite out of place to me.

  7. I love this photo! Funny you should mention dormant plants...the weather here is getting slightly warmer and the piles of snow are starting to melt revealing the brown, tired earth beneath.
