A History of Beirut's Newspapers

The other day as I was rushing through downtown, I noticed this:

It's a new outdoor exhibit of the history of newspaper publishing in Beirut, located at the northwest corner of the new downtown shopping mall--Beirut Souks. Reproductions of localy published papers are organized by date and displayed on these pillars. Here are some additional views:

A sign at the exhibit said that the originals are held in the National Library, and that there is a guidebook for the exhibition which features additional images. I'll have to get my hands on it.

  1. Nice idea.
They remind me of the round kiosks that used to be on the street corners, plastered with all kinds of notices.

  2. Yes I wonder how long they will look pristine like this being out on the street. A lot of work seems to have gone into the display.

  3. I love the contrast of architectures in the top shot. What is that hollow cinnamon-colored building to the left? It must have been so elegant.

  4. Hollow is a good word for it. It's just one of the many older buildings that were spared--there's so much new construction, but it seems they're restoring it. Downtown is an eclectic mix of new and old almost everywhere you look.
