We recently went to Bourj Hammoud, the Armenian section of Beirut, to do some shopping. This was our first time back to that neighborhood since we left in 2007.
I took this picture along a street that is (as far as I know) always closed to traffic, which is probably my favorite thing about it. There are dozens of shoe stores along this road, and while we were there we picked up some new shoes for our kids. They needed it.

Sounds like a fun outing. How is the Armenian section different than "your" section of town?
ReplyDeleteWhenever I think of Beirut, I think of "The Paris of the Mideast," and I grieve for all that has been lost. Your photo makes me want to visit and walk the street with you!
ReplyDeleteThis particular corner of the Armenian section is recognized as a shopping destination, whereas my neighborhood is just residential. I've heard that Bourj Hammoud is the place to go to for custom made shoes, bespoke (tailored) suits, etc. I used to have all of my custom framing done there, though this time around I'm looking for something closer to home.
ReplyDeleteinteresting buildings...I would love to shop there!
ReplyDeleteA fascinating street. I also like the fact it is closed to traffic...makes shopping much more pleasant!
ReplyDeleteHope you find what you are looking for in Beirut!
This street has an awful lot of character.
ReplyDeletethat's one sweet scooter!
ReplyDeleteAn overpowering sense of decay ...
